Ford Motor on Wednesday evening delivered higher than expected profits in the first quarter, driven by strength in its commercial business. Quarterly commentary Ford Blue , which represents Ford's gas-powered and hybrid vehicles, saw volumes and revenues down 11% and 13%, respectively. The lower volumes shouldn't be much of a surprise given Ford's pivot toward making more in-demand hybrids and ICE vehicles. Ford raised its adjusted free cash flow outlook for the year by $500 million to between $6.5 billion and $7.5 billion. Lowered capex with higher profits is what we want to see because greater capital efficiency should translate to a higher multiple.

Ford announced Friday it's reducing production of its F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup truck, starting April 1, due to slowing demand for EVs. The automaker said the Lightning cuts are being made to achieve the "optimal balance of production, sales growth and profitability." But since Ford is cutting back EV production, the automaker's goal of scaling up its EV buildout could be delayed. In fact, the Maverick Hybrid sales exceeded the F-150 Hybrid last year with a 67% increase to more than 52,300 vehicles. The world needs affordable EVs more than ever as electric cars will play a big role in hcelping countries cut planet-heating pollution. “When legacy [carmakers] talk about catching up to Tesla or catching up to the leading Chinese automakers, it’s difficult. It is by far the world’s biggest EV battery manufacturer and dominant in the supply and processing of many critical components needed to make the batteries. Global automakers have had little choice but to enter into joint ventures with Chinese EV and battery manufacturers. EU lawmakers have voiced concerns that government subsidies allow Chinese EV makers to keep prices artificially low, creating unfair competition for European rivals.

"We still have serious issues to work through, but we do want to recognize that Ford is showing that they're serious about reaching a deal," the UAW president said. Biden sided with the striking workers last Friday when the UAW launched its initial targeted strikes against three facilities in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike against GM and Stellantis but said that progress in negotiations with Ford means it won’t expand the number of Ford workers on the picket lines. “At noon Eastern today, all parts distributions centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be on strike,” he said. Still the announcement of progress at Ford raised hopes that the strike, at least at there, could be brought to a relatively quick end. But the UAW’s expanded strike is now targeting the parts distribution centers for GM and Stellantis. As of 10:30 am ET, Stellantis (STLA) is up 0.98%; Ford (F) is up 3.57%; and GM (GM) is up 0.7%.

The United Auto Workers strike entered Day 4 on Monday, and both sides remained far apart on pay hikes. By striking Ford, the UAW is "playing with fire," according to Jim, who said the automaker might get tired of trying to appease union demands and just lock workers out. Ford CEO Jim Farley told CNBC last week that UAW demands would bankrupt the company. In addition to top-line pressure on its EV unit and companywide cost pressure from the UAW strike, Ford needs to work its way through this transition from high-profit ICE vehicles to the currently money-losing EVs. Stellantis said the facility would "continue to be our North American headquarters and North America technical center." It's not guaranteed the facilities would close under a labor deal; however, Stellantis is required to include potential closures or sales of any location where a UAW member works, a company source said. Stellantis North American Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart, who is overseeing the UAW talks, said the company needs to "modernize" the Mopar facilities. Stewart, without disclosing details of the plan, described the company's proposal for Belvidere as a "very compelling offer." "This battle is not about the president," Fain said. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CNBC in an interview Monday that the White House wants a "win-win" deal. Nearly 13,000 UAW members are on strike at three key plants in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. Former President Donald Trump is also courting support from UAW members, while attacking the union's leaders, as he pursues another term in the White House. Some car companies think that fake engine noises will get drivers to consider going electric. Hyundai and Dodge have both unveiled EVs that blast fake exhaust noises outside the car. Electric cars are inherently quiet. Last year, the brand showed off an electric concept car with a multi-speed transmission and a phony exhaust sound that mimics a supercharged V8 engine. "Automakers are responding to some enthusiasts' worries that electric cars have no soul," Ed Kim, president and chief analyst at AutoPacific, an automotive research and consulting firm, told Insider.

We're raising our eyebrows at Ford 's (F) new price cuts on its popular electric pick-up truck. Jim Cramer called Ford's price cuts "counterintuitive" given the robust demand the F-150 Lightning has been seeing so far this year. In February, the company had to pause production and shipments on its electric pickup truck due to a potential battery issue. Meanwhile, prices for new electric vehicles were down 20% for the month driven by Tesla's EV price cuts earlier this year.
